Chennai's Madras Christian College recently unveiled a smart duck designed to monitor the water quality of a lake situated within its 300-acre campus in Tambaram. This IoT-enabled duck, controllable remotely, will traverse the lake to collect real-time data on important water parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and pH. The lake, a significant water reservoir on campus, underwent desilting by Bisleri International Limited as part of their CSR initiative, which also provided funding for the development of a prototype for water quality assessment. Collaborating with the MCC-MRF Innovation Park team, a 3D-printed duck equipped with sensors was created, along with an app for data reception and analysis. The Principal of Madras Christian College, Paul Wilson, expressed that the smart duck initiative, his brainchild, will enable data-driven decisions for lake conservation, safeguarding campus ecology and wildlife. The solar-powered duck, designed by startup KOLOZEN, can operate for up to two days without sunlight and can be manually recharged as needed. Data collected by the duck has been transmitted by the startup for the past two weeks. Additionally, there are plans to deploy similar ducks in external water bodies to monitor and gather water quality data for local authorities. Researchers foresee the potential of creating a hydroinformatics platform using this data, providing insights into the environmental health and diseases of water bodies during various conditions and seasons. The lush scrub jungle within the MCC premises is home to diverse wildlife, including spotted deer, porcupines, toddy cats, and bats. The college installed cameras with sensors in their eyes to monitor the movements of wild animals on the campus.
